    • 2016 Key Initiative Updates (10 minutes)
      • Blue Water Task Force
      • Testing still occurring twice a month at 4 beaches. Contact Shannon if interested in volunteering.
      • Cigarette Litter Prevention Program
        • 25 hotels participating. 14 beach trolleys have anti-litter signage which were funded by Chapter and include Surfrider logo. Surfrider has 4 receptacles to distribute to 4 restaurants located on boardwalk. Volunteers needed to help with this initiative. Next butt scan will be July 31st at 6 pm. Volunteers meet at the VB Convention Center to carpool. (postponed to August 7)
      • Ocean Friendly Gardens Grant Program
        • A grant program and application are in the works for home owners and schools interested in planting an OFG. OFGs were explained to those not familiar. More info can be found on website.
      • Ocean Friendly Restaurants Program
        • VB Chapter is working on an Ocean-Friendly Restaurants program started by Surfrider Foundation. Restaurants will be required to follow a set of mandatory and optional criteria to be certified Ocean-Friendly. Details are available on the website and we will need volunteers to assist with this program once it is set up.
      • Reusable Bag Youth Program
        • 2300 bags were distributed to 19 schools. There are approximately 11,000 1st and 4th graders in the Virginia Beach public schools. This is the age group in which we are working with. We are working on getting sponsors to help pay for this program for the next school year. We will need volunteers to help with educating students about plastic bags and other plastic pollution issues next year.
      • Next Movie Night?
        • Movie Night to be held at Nick’s house on Friday. DeWitt movie night could not be organized in time due to lack of time. Try to hold a movie night in August. Would like to hold a movie night after a “Slow Ride” event with kid’s movie. Fall movie night will be at Pungo Board House.
      • Surfboard Raffles
        • Two boards are being raffled. One is $5 a ticket or 5 for $20. Winner to be drawn at Fall Movie Night. Another board is being raffled off to volunteers only. Volunteers receive a raffle ticket after each volunteer event that they help with. If they are active members, they will receive 2 tickets. Winner to be drawn on Oct. 30 at Zombie Cleanup.
      • Volunteer Coordinator’s Update/Opportunities
        • Upcoming opportunities include beach cleanups; Cape Henry SUP race; Other possible tabling events.
        • Committees: need to form committees to help out EC members which will help with chapter growth as well as future EC member possibilities. Committees include Social Events, Volunteer Coordinator, Membership, etc.
      • Beach Clean-ups, it’s ICC time!
        • August – Lynnhaven Beach?
          • VB Resort Hotel offered to work with us on a cleanup and possibly do a pizza party after the cleanup. SUP before the cleanup too.
        • September – Fisherman Island with LDC and PGT?
          • General consensus is yes! Need some larger vehicles to transport more volunteers due to limited parking.
        • October 30 – Zombie Cleanup

          • App created by the Ocean Conservancy will eventually allow groups to add and download data as a group from individuals.

            • Ask local surf shops to keep our flyers at their checkout counters. Can they sell our t-shirts?
            • Look into advertising with VB Locals, VB Hot Deals
            • Ask local retailers to give discounts to those using Surfrider bag
            • ECSC – need to work on sustainable event practices. How can Surfrider help?
          • What’s on your mind???
            • Fireworks and other litter from pier on 4th of July. Can we create a (bilingual) campaign for next year?
